“Lay down a pledge for me with yourself;
    who is there who will give surety for me?(A)
Since you have closed their minds to understanding,
    therefore you will not let them triumph.(B)
Those who denounce friends for reward—
    the eyes of their children will fail.(C)

“He has made me a byword of the peoples,
    and I am one before whom people spit.(D)
My eye has grown dim from grief,

The upright are appalled at this,

Yet the righteous hold to their way,

Live as Servants of God

11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul.[a](A) 12 Conduct yourselves honorably among the gentiles, so that, though they malign you as evildoers, they may see your honorable deeds and glorify God when he comes to judge.[b](B)

13 For the Lord’s sake be subject to every human authority,[c] whether to the emperor as supreme(C) 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. 15 For it is God’s will that by doing right you should silence the ignorance of the foolish. 16 As servants of God, live as free people, yet do not use your freedom as a pretext for evil.(D) 17 Honor everyone. Love the family of believers.[d] Fear God. Honor the emperor.(E)

The Example of Christ’s Suffering

18 Slaves, be subject to your masters with all respect,[e] not only those who are good and gentle but also those who are dishonest. 19 For it is a commendable thing if, being aware of God, a person endures pain while suffering unjustly. 20 If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do good and suffer for it, this is a commendable thing before God.(F) 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps.(G)

22 “He committed no sin,
    and no deceit was found in his mouth.”

23 When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly.(H) 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross,[f] so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds[g] you have been healed.(I) 25 For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.[h](J)

Wives and Husbands

Wives, in the same way, be subject to your husbands, so that, even if some of them do not obey the word, they may be won over without a word by their wives’ conduct,(K) when they see the purity and respect of your conduct. Do not adorn yourselves outwardly by braiding your hair and by wearing gold ornaments or fine clothing;(L) rather, let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight.(M) It was in this way long ago that the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves by being subject to their husbands. Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. You have become her daughters as long as you do what is good and never let fears alarm you.(N)

Husbands, in the same way, show consideration for your wives in your life together, paying honor to the woman—though the weaker vessel,[i] they are joint heirs of the gracious gift of life—so that nothing may hinder your prayers.(O)

Bildad Speaks: God Punishes the Wicked

18 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:

“How long will you hunt for words?
    Consider, and then we shall speak.
Why are we counted as cattle?
    Why are we stupid in your sight?(A)
You who tear yourself in your anger—
    shall the earth be forsaken because of you
    or the rock be removed out of its place?(B)

“Surely the light of the wicked is put out,
    and the flame of their fire does not shine.(C)
The light is dark in their tent,
    and the lamp above them is put out.
Their strong steps are shortened,
    and their own schemes throw them down.(D)
For they are thrust into a net by their own feet,
    and they walk into a pitfall.(E)
A trap seizes them by the heel;
    a snare lays hold of them.(F)
10 A rope is hid for them in the ground,
    a trap for them in the path.(G)
11 Terrors frighten them on every side
    and chase them at their heels.(H)
12 Their strength is consumed by hunger,[a]
    and calamity is ready for their stumbling.(I)
13 By disease their skin is consumed;[b]
    the firstborn of Death consumes their limbs.
14 They are torn from the tent in which they trusted
    and are brought to the king of terrors.(J)
15 In their tents nothing remains;
    sulfur is scattered upon their habitations.(K)
16 Their roots dry up beneath,
    and their branches wither above.(L)
17 Their memory perishes from the earth,
    and they have no name in the street.(M)
18 They are thrust from light into darkness
    and driven out of the world.
19 They have no offspring or descendant among their people

20 They of the west are appalled at their fate,
    and horror seizes those of the east.
21 Surely such are the dwellings of the ungodly;

The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth

He left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands!(A) Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary[a] and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense[b] at him.(B) Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown and among their own kin and in their own house.”(C) And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them.(D) And he was amazed at their unbelief.

The Mission of the Twelve

Then he went about among the villages teaching.(E) He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.(F) He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff: no bread, no bag, no money in their belts, but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. 10 He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. 11 If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent.(G) 13 They cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.(H)

The Death of John the Baptist

14 King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’s[c] name had become known. Some were[d] saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead, and for this reason these powers are at work in him.” 15 But others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”(I) 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”(J)

17 For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod[e] had married her. 18 For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(K) 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed,[f] and yet he liked to listen to him.(L) 21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee.(M) 22 When his daughter Herodias[g] came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests, and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.” 23 And he swore[h] to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.”(N) 24 She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the baptizer.” 25 Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 The king was deeply grieved, yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s[i] head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
